Sam’s Summer Series Picks

We’re all about the series at Auburn this summer, so Sam’s back with some of her picks:

You know when you’ve been reading a book and you’re soakin’ it in, loving every minute of it, and you get to end? You basically have to take a moment of silence as you say goodbye to all the characters you’ve gotten to know over the course of thirty or so chapters?

Yeah, trust me, I’ve been there!  I love a good book, but hate when a good book ends. And even though I have a nightstand full of books, and several books tucked into nooks and crannies, it’s still daunting to search for another book that will be as good as the one I just finished.

So, before you begin scouring bookshelves, reading dust jackets (or if you’re like me, reading the end of the first chapter to see if it makes you want to read second), maybe what you need this summer is a book that comes with a couple buddies. Maybe what you need is to dig into a series, and we have several to choose from:

  1. The Empirium Trilogy by Claire Legrand

Why? Because the second book JUST hit the shelves this summer, so it already promises another adventure when you’re done.  Plus, it’s imaginative, juicy, and if you need further evidence then check out my blog post about Furyborn.

  1. The Dark Gifts Trilogy by Vic James

Why? England. Aristocracy. Those living in servitude. Sound like anything else we know? (Hint hint …think Downton Abbey, but crueler.) Plus, you get a dose of magic in this modern-day dystopian society…So, even better!

  1. The Undertow Trilogy by Michael Buckley

Why? One word… Aliens! Aliens come, invade earth, and are required to assimilate, and where’s the best place to start, but in a New York high school.  Just in case you are not into the whole alien thing, this book has a great love story too. Because who doesn’t love love!?

  1. The Crazy Rich Asians Trilogy by Kevin Kwan

Why? It’s literally a modern-day fairy tale. Girl meets boy. Girl loves boy. Girl finds out he’s super rich!  #livinthedream. Except for the fact that she has to deal with nosy relatives, scheming social climbers, and a condescending mama.  But hey! That certainly promises some great drama and a few laughs too!

  1. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before Trilogy by Jenny Han

Why? Because. I. Said. So. Everybody fell in love with these characters in the Netflix Original Movie, and the second movie is currently in production. Get a jump-start into all the loves, laughs, and drama before the next movie is out!

  1. The Calculating Stars Series by Mary Robinette Kowal

Why? It’s the perfect blend of Science Fiction and History. If Hidden Figures was your thing, then this will be right up your alley. Check out our friend John’s blog on The Calculating Stars here.

  1. The Jackaby Series by William Ritter

Why? Serial Killers, 1892 New England, and a bit of the supernatural are at the core of this story. As the Chicago Tribune put it: “It’s Sherlock Holmes crossed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Plus, this has 4 books… yes, four books! So, it will be the gift that keeps on giving this summer.
