You’ve (hopefully) bought all of your textbooks, why not pick up something just for fun? Our course materials specialist, John, has a rec for you: The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal. Here’s more from John:
While I’m a book lover and enjoy most of what I read, it’s not often that I outright rave about a book. That said, I absolutely lovedThe Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal.
So What’s it about? Here’s the gist – a natural disaster in 1952 results in the need to accelerate the fledgling space program and explore our solar system. Our main character is Elma York, a ‘calculator’ for the program (think Hidden Figures) and experienced pilot. She strives to get herself and other women accepted in the astronaut corps and into space.
Even if a mix of history and science fiction isn’t your thing, it’s a very approachable book with a strong lead. I actually wanted to pump my fist in the closing chapters.
I highly recommend it, whether you are a fan of SF, history, Hidden Figures, strong women characters or just plain good books. And the good news is the second book, The Fated Sky, is in our store now. You can also find several short stories, including “The Lady Astronaut of Mars,” the one that started the whole series. I hope others enjoy this book as much as I do.
You can find The Calculating Stars in-store or online.
