Baby Reading Book

Furyborn by Claire Legrand

If you are one the people who AREN’T talking about this book, I’m here to give you a little insight. It’s like all of your favorite book series (A Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and The Hunger Games) had a baby!

Here’s what we know:

“When assassins ambush her best friend, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing herself as one of a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light, and a queen of blood. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven elemental magic trials. If she fails, she will be executed…unless the trials kill her first.

One thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a fairy tale to Eliana Ferracora. A bounty hunter for the Undying Empire, Eliana believes herself untouchable―until her mother vanishes. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain and discovers that the evil at the empire’s heart is more terrible than she ever imagined.

As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world―and of each other.”

You See… Queens. Blood. Legends. Wars. Anyone else getting some Game of Thrones vibes?

Woot Woo

I’m going to give you the top five reasons why you should make Furyborn your next book:

        1. Interesting mythology that doesn’t bog you down:
Given the intricate world-building that often accompanies a fantasy novel, I wasn’t sure if I could keep up with the world Claire creates. FYI, Claire Legrand is the author-just in case you guys didn’t catch that (not sure if Claire and I are on a first name basis yet, but I hope to be by the end of this post). Sometimes, a mythology-dense fantasy novel will have me like:

High-fives to Claire, though. I totally got into it. I loved the old-world vibe, and when I started questioning all the elemental magic stuff, there was a nifty little chart in the back of the book. Once I familiarized myself with it, reading this book was like watching a movie. (psst… Claire, I’m gonna need you to let me know if we are going to be seeing this on the big screen soon. K?)
        2. Two for the price of one:
I’m all about getting more for my money and with this gem, you get two strong female leads with two storylines! Two storylines means twice the drama. AND I LOVE DRAMA! (Claire, girl, you did me right!) Fierce, strong, bold, brave. You name it, Rielle and Eliana got it!

#girlpower. When you have strong characters, they are bound to ruffle some feathers. Things aren’t always black and white for these two, but that just makes it all the more interesting. You get a taste of all the juiciness in one chapter, itching to get the next. And with chapters that alternate between Rielle and Eliana’s story, it’s just double the anticipation. (Way to keep us on our toes, Claire!)
        3. The love triangles:
I know there are plenty of people who will sit there and criticize a love triangle plotline, but let’s be real! We all secretly kind of like it! Rielle longs to be with her best friend (and Prince), Audric, but he is engaged to her other best friend, Ludivine. Yes! She is in love with her best friend’s man! ALL. THE. JUICE.

Eliana’s love life is… complicated. There is some flirtation with her partner in crime Harkan, but it’s not until Simon comes along that the real chemistry ignites. (Claire, if you are reading this, those were some of my favorite parts). The banter between these two gave me a good laugh. I’m definitely team #Elimon. (There, I shipped it! Can we make this a thing?!)

        4. The chill factor:
Umm… all I’m going say is there are parts to Rielle’s storyline that straight up give me the creeps. (Corien can keep his, uh, ‘mind’ to himself- am I right, Claire?)

        5. The mini-twists:
Thanks to some foreshadowing from Claire, you will be able to predict some of the ways the story will go… and then there are some you won’t! (Ludivine’s storyline- Claire, you totes got me, girl!)

There are a few other character arcs that took me by surprise, but they are worth discovering on your own. There are still two books left in this series, so who knows how the tides will turn? (and what curveballs you’ll throw at us, Claire! I’ll be waiting!)

So, what didn’t I like about Furyborn?  That I have to wait (who knows how long?) for book 2!!!

But seriously, Claire, take your time! We know stories this good aren’t written in a day.
